The Alpha-Omega Speech and Debate Association is dedicated to enriching the educational experiences and social interaction of Christian home-schooled students in the Central Ohio region. AOSDA provides Speech and Policy Debate instruction and coaching for Christian Home-schoolers in Columbus and the wider mid-Ohio region. We meet on Tuesdays at Northwest United Methodist Church in Dublin, just south of Henderson Road on Riverside Drive. Our students come from all over the central Ohio region for group coaching and teaching in class sizes ranging from as few as three to as many as twenty students. We currently employ five adult coaches and two student-assistant teachers to meet the demand for our classes.
Classes are divided into two distinct training courses. From early September through the end of December we provide lecture-based class instruction on Speech and Policy Debate in separate tracks. Speech and Advanced Debate meet on alternating Tuesdays during this period and the final class meeting is a round robin Speech and Debate competition that mimics a second-session tournament event on a much smaller scale, usually the first or second Tuesday in December with a holiday party on the following Tuesday.
This second session is sometimes referred to as competition session or second season, and consists of high-participation coaching sessions with AOSDA instructors focused on 4 major multi-club invitational tournaments put on through the Christian Communicators of Ohio Speech and Debate league (CCO). Beginning in early January and running through mid-May, the general pattern is for one tournament each month, with a mixed invitational selection of clubs participating in each. The club also meets as a whole each month for team-building games and activities, and depending on the tournament schedule we usually also hold two round robin competitions within this timeframe to keep competitors sharp and at the peak of their skills. Speech and debate students will additionally meet for individual coaching during competition season. All club activities take place on Tuesdays; CCO tournaments begin early Friday mornings and finish late Saturday evenings. Debate runs both days, but Varsity Speech usually competes on Saturday only. Much more information about the tournaments, rules, ballots, judging standards, the debate resolution for the year and more can be found at the CCO Debate Website.
